Great Escape Auto Repair was opened 23 years ago by Ray Friedman in Alexandria. The shop is located just across Route 1 from the Potomac Yards Shopping Center, just a minute south of Crystal City.

Ray has built the reputation of a shop that gives great service for a fair price. He and his staff are willing to tackle jobs that many other auto shops will turn away.

They also love working on old cars; there is always at least one old interesting car in the shop. It might be a muscle car, an antique car, or even a replica Cobra.

The shop is fully equipped with all of the necessary equipment, including diagnostic machines, tire machines, front end equipment, brake lathes, air conditioning flush machine, cooling system recycling machine, etc.

Besides offering the standard maintenance and repairs, Ray will also take on motor repair, engine rebuilding, transmission repair, and transmission rebuilding. A transmission specialist is on staff. The specialist’s father had a custom transmission shop when he was growing up, so he has over 35 years of experience in transmission repair work.

Many shops do not want to take in electrical work, because it can be difficult and time consuming. Great Escape does electric system problem analysis and repair.

They also offer exhaust system repair and exhaust system replacement, repair and service air conditioning systems, and heat and cooling system repairs. All standard repairs are offered including brake repairs, brake jobs, tune-ups, and oil changes.

Many shops do not actually have their own front end machine, and they send your car to another shop for that work. Great Escape has a front end machine, and will soon add a second machine.

Tire mounting and balancing is a specialty, even with those difficult custom wheels and mags. Great Escape has new tires and used tires in stock; and if they don’t have it, they will work closely with you to source just the right tires for your vehicle.

Great Escape Auto Repair specializes in working on collector cars, muscle cars, kit cars, race cars, and antique cars. Ray has many years of experience racing cars himself, so he really knows what it takes to properly prepare and maintain a special car. In the shop you will see photos on the walls of many vintage cars they have worked on; including Torino, Chevelle, Mustang, AC Cobra, Thunderbird, Corvette, Impala, Camaro, Oldsmobile 442, Cadillacs from the 1960’s, and hot rods.
